| FRI computing capability revolves around
an SGI Origin 2000 server. This Scalable Shared Memory
Multiprocessing computer is based on the Silicon Graphics
S2MP Architecture and provides impressive performance
and unparalleled scalability. In its present configuration,
the FRI server is configured with 2 Mips R10000 microprocessors,
100 gigabytes of RAM, and over 200 gigabytes of storage;
all necessary to handle the extremely large interactive
database needed by the Institute. The FRI server houses
the Forest Resources Information System (FRIS), a comprehensive,
multi-format database on southern forest ecosystems.
In addition, three SGI Octane workstations and one O2
workstation power the Institute's 3-D visualization
and modeling work. These workstations provide advanced
capabilities needed to support the Insititute's research
activities. Several Windows NT and Macintosh computers
area available for staff use. |
